Whether the process is in waste water treatment, petrochemistry, organic chemistry, metal industry, power plants or other industries, a wide range of applications is available for Metrohm Applikon online analyzers. The modular concept of the analyzers makes it possible to adapt the configuration of many of our analyzers to specific applications or circumstances. A complete overview of all possible applications with these analyzers can be downloaded from here. A few typical examples are given below.
Salt in Crude
Excessive chloride (salt) left in the crude oil frequently resulst in higher corrosion rates in refining units and also has detrimental effects on catalysts used in these units. The operation of a desalination system can be very challenging due too changing process variable. to improve the process control, reduce costs and to use the desalter as efficiently as possible, accurate and reliable on-line salt in crude oil data is needed. Our application in an ADI2045TI Process analyzer meets the requirements of the ASTM D3230 norm. this analzyer can be ATEX certified for an zone 1 environment.
Ca & Mg in Brine
Most of worlds Chlorine gas is produced through the membrane cell process. In this process chlorine is produced by electrolyzing a brine solution. This electrolysis takes place in a two compartment cell separated by a membrane. Saturated brine solutions contain relatively high amounts of Calcium and Magnesium (5-10 mg/l), while the membranes are only able to handle levels below 20 ppb. Both compounds are therefore removed in a two step filter process. In order to reduce cost and lengthen the lifetime of the membranes, the levels of Ca and Mg in between the two filters (high concentrations) and at the outlet of the second filter (low concentrations) need to be carefully controlled. For both levels this can be done with a colorimetric titration in an ADI2045TI.
TBC in Styrene
In Styrene production, the addition of TBC (tertiary-butyl-catechol) as a stabilizer is critical to prevent the styrene from polymerization during storage and transport. TBC levels need to be maintained at a level above 10-15 ppm. Problem is that the TBC concentration in Styrene in the presence of oxygen will slowly decrease. Using a ADI2045TI with a colorimetric method, the TBC levels can be monitored continuously in order to maintain the concentration at the proper level.
Sodium and Silica in Power Plants
Both sodium and silica play a major role in corrosion in cooling water. For power plants, it is essential to keep the concentrations of these substances under control. With the ALERT-ion equipped with the Metrohm Na-ISE, it is possible to measure sodium concentrations down to 1 ppb. In case lower detection limits are required, the ALERT can be exchanged for the more accurate ADI2018 analyzer. Silica in cooling water or high purity water can be measured with the ALERT color, in concentrations as low as a 1 ppb.
Peracetic Acid in bottling lines
Peracetic acid is used in the bottling industry to sterilize bottles for filling with beverages. When the level of PAA is too high, the taste of the product is bad, the cost is high and large amounts of water are needed for rinsing. If the level is too low, mould will grow in the bottle and the product is lost. Peracetic acid is determined by reaction with Iodide under formation of I2 , which can then be determined colorimetrically, all this can be done with an ADI2019. As these analyzers are operating in a “clean” environment, they are configured in a stainless steel housing. Sample preconditioning is also required here, as samples come at different temperatures and pressures and sometimes with a lot of gas bubbles.
Alkalinity of brewing water
The alkalinity of brewing water determines the suitability of water for the production of beer. Highly alkaline water can only be used to brew stouts, where only soft water can be used for the production of Lager. It is thus necessary for brewing companies to continuously control the water quality. Alkalinity is determined by slowly titrating with acid, and from the inflection points calculating the alkalinity as ppm CaCO3. This measurement can be performed with an ADI 2045TI.
